Fiber Optic PhotoFiber Optics Network Certification Courses

Butler's Business Performance Group, in partnership with BDI DataLynk, is proud to announce Fiber Optics Network Certification courses. These courses prepare students to take the CFOT (Certified Fiber Optics Technician) exam, which is given and graded at the end of class.

Challenge Your Technicians...

Ask your Fiber Optics Technicians (from all years of experience) these simple, basic questions. Students who successfully complete our courses can answer them-can your technicians?

  • Per ANSI/EIA/TIA-568-B.3, what is the maximum attenuation allowed per mated pair of connectors?
  • What is the maximum attenuation allowed for a mechanical splice?
  • Which multimode fiber cable provides for 10GbE at 300 meters?
  • How does one perform a Link Loss Budget Analysis for a fiber optic system? In other words - how does one analyze the resulting attenuation of a fiber segment? Is the Power too high or is it too low and what does a good technician do about it in both respects?
  • Using a Power Source & Light Meter, do you know how to determine which connector has the higher attenuation when testing a fiber segment?
  • Do you know how to use a Bare Fiber Adapter and a VFL?
  • Do you know how to read an OTDR Trace? If so - what is a Gainer? What are LSA's?
  • What is the maximum pulling tension for installing indoor fiber optics cable?
  • Considering reference cables, can you explain Method B? Can you explain Method A?
  • What are the 4 elements that make up a fiber optic transmission system?
  • Erbium-doped optical fiber is used for what purpose?

"If your fiber installation technicians can't answer the basic questions listed above, why not enroll them in our CFOT program so they can do a better job for you AND your customers."-Bob Ballard, RCDD, CFOI

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This program is divided into individual courses, each comprised of all topics needed to prepare for the Certified Fiber Optics Technician (CFOT) and the Advanced Fiber Optics Certification Exam that is given and graded the final day of class.

The format of the course includes:

  • Chapter exams
  • Class discussion
  • Hands-on activities and exercises

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
The Basic Fiber Optics Networking Course is designed for anyone interested in learning basic fiber optic networking and becoming a Certified Fiber Optics Technician. Additionally, the course assumes a basic working knowledge of computers, be able to see and identify small items, and be able to speak and understand the English language.

The Advanced Fiber Optics Network Testing and Maintenance Course is designed for students who seek advanced training with the testing and maintenance of fiber optics networks. The course assumes knowledge covered in a CFOT or equivalent course within the preceding 6 months, or 1 year Fiber Optics related experience.

WHAT CAN BE EXPECTED
By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Install, terminate, and test multimode/single-node fiber optics networks effectively and efficiently
  • Build and test a fiber optic LAN network
  • Identify fiber network defects
  • Provide Quality Assurance (QA) procedures to minimize or eliminate future network outages

BENEFITS
This course boasts these and many other benefits:

  • Expanded knowledge of fiber optic networking
  • Vast hands-on experience gained
  • In-depth reference material
  • Saved time and money (all inclusive-course and exam)

About the Instructor:
instructor

Bob Ballard, RCDD, CFOI, CFOT, and owner of BDI DataLynk, is a Registered Communication Distribution Designer appointed by BICSI, and is also recognized by the Fiber Optics Association as a Certified Fiber Optics Instructor. Bob has been actively involved in the telecommunications industry for over 20 years. His expertise in the area of fiber connectivity has made him a sought after consultant whenever problems arise. He speaks at Universities, Architectural Firms, Integrator Gatherings, and Conventions. He has performed fiber optics training for contractors all over the US and Mexico. He also has taught numerous fiber optics training sessions in the United States and Mexico on subjects ranging from Long-Haul Fiber Connectivity to Network Grounding.

Testimonial from a former student:

Bob,
I want to thank you personally for coming to Houston on such a short notice. The fiber optics training you offered has expanded my knowledge in fiber optics, and has allowed me to understand theory and basics that I didn't know prior. Your teaching methods are excellent both verbal and hands-on. Your saying, "I can teach you to get zeros on your connectors" is such a true statement and I had the opportunity to prove that today. I'm looking forward to using the knowledge that you have provided. I will be keeping in touch as I'm interested in taking your Advanced Specialist class as well. Again, thank you.
- Ron L., Houston, Texas
